Project description:
To create a positive school environment and culture, where every student/staff/community member feels valued and appreciated through the creation of an art exhibition that addresses the question: Why do I matter?
Nevada has the 4th largest suicide rate in the nation, nearly double the national rate. Among teenagers, suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death from people aged 15-24 and the 2nd leading cause for people age 25-35. Additionally, Nevadan elders have the highest rate of suicide in the country. (https://nvsuicideprevention.org/facts-about-suicide/)
Each student in the school will be asked to reflect on the question: Why do I matter? HOSA, Student Council and Psychology students will present a lesson to all students during advisory time. The lesson will ask students to:
Portraits will then be printed on 11x17 inch cardstock with #whyyoumatter on the bottom. These images will be hung in the school, lining the hallways in all four buildings. We will host a Why You Matter Reception for the school and community. Note cards (designed by art students), will be available for students, staff, and community to write a note to someone who matters to them. We will also have a large blank wall where people can write messages to others in a public forum.
Our project will continue to include the community. We will host Why You Matter Days in order to provide an opportunity for our community to reflect on why they matter and be a part of the conversation and exhibition. We will set up at various locations in order to photograph community members.
The exhibition portion of the project will continue in various locations throughout the community. These locations include the library and the County Administration Building. We hope to add more locations as the project grows.

- Recognize that they matter to many people in their lives.
- To help students recognize their unique importance in the world.
- To identify students who may be struggling with inner self-worth and to refer them to school counseling should they need assistance.
- To assist students in writing a single "Why I matter" statement.
- To improve school and community climate.
- To recreate connections that have been lost and to reaffirm each person's validity so that our community continues to grow as a welcoming, positive place.
